Schoolwide Enrichment Model SEM
The
Schoolwide Enrichment Model has a number of components that work together:
1.
Type Is are
enriching activities for all students to introduce new topics,
ideas,
careers, etc. These may come in the form of a field trip to a
museum, a mini unit on an
“unusual topic” –like archeology, special assemblies about topics like
wildlife, ecology, inventors, school events like enrichment days, school-wide
spelling bee, invention convention or programs like Destination
Imagination. These may come in the form
of a whole school event, a special whole class lesson or mini-unit (outside of
the normal curriculum), pull out programs, mini-units, small group or individual
lessons, enrichment days, or after school programs and events. Photos
2.
Type IIs happen when
students show a keen interest or high
ability
for a specific topic and skills are taught to help the child learn
more
about this area or field. These skills are often taught in a pull
out program by the enrichment teacher or a guest mentor.
3.
Type IIIs occur when a student
develops a high interest in a topic and
decides
to solve a problem related to the topic with his or her own
solution. This involves student time inside and outside
of school and
may
last a few months or a couple of years. The student with support of adults
including the enrichment teacher drives this.
These students must possess the 3 ring components that include
creativity, task commitment, and above average ability.
